Castalian String Quartet

Iffley Church Hall, Saturday May 6th 2017

Castalian String Quartet

Iffley Music Society was very fortunate in securing the Castalian Quartet for our May concert We were treated to one of the best evenings of chamber music ever heard in our church hall.  Since its formation in 2011 this brilliant young Quartet has won many awards and gained a strong reputation, fully endorsed by their performance in Iffley.  Their programme ranged from Haydn to Adès, via Schubert and Beethoven, and their technical mastery and coherent interpretation were consistent throughout. Adès ' "The Four Quarters" presents challenges that they seemed to relish, resulting in a fresh and lively rendering, accessible to even the most wary in an audience.  Clear and beautifully coordinated playing in the Schubert Quartettsatz  and Haydn op76 brought new life to these more familiar pieces. The climax of the evening was Beethoven's 1st Razumovsky quartet, which they played with great energy and sensitivity, their youthful enthusiasm adding fresh insights to this monumental work. Overall we enjoyed an evening of unqualified delight, demonstrated by the enthusiastic applause from the capacity audience and with demands for a return visit heard on all sides!
